Many of you will be giving internet marketing a go while also holding down a full-time job, so learning how to get the most out of your hours is essential.

That said, sometimes it’s even more difficult to be efficient if you have all day to do it, which is why these tips also apply to full-time marketers.

Tip number 1: Use time-management software

We recommend Clockingit.com : It’s free and it does the trick.

Add in your ongoing and one-off tasks and select a due date. When you begin working on a task, click on the “start work” icon and ClockingIt will start the timer. Click on the icon again when you finish working on the task. You can keep stopping and starting until you finish the task — at which point Clockingit will tell you how long you’ve spent on it.

The software makes it easy to see where you are spending your time and pinpoint potential bottle-necks. (It’s quite shocking to realize that you spent five hours of your working week checking your email!) It’s also a great tool to get your staff using too, if and when you have any.

I also like to use a stopwatch when I’m trying to accomplish a lot of work in a short period of time. I highly recommend setting your stopwatch for 2 hours and then working solidly for those two hours, refusing any interruptions. Try to do this a couple of times every day and you’ll see big results! (If you’re nervous, try 30 minutes to begin with. You can still get an amazing amount done in 30 minutes if you avoid distractions! Once you master that, increase the time period.)

Tip number 2: Keep a notebook of ideas

It’s easy to get distracted by a brainwave while in the middle of a task. If you follow it up, you can inadvertently spend hours of time away from what you really needed to get done. Obviously, this isn’t good for productivity — but at the same time, you don’t want to ignore and potentially forget about these good ideas!

Dave Allen, author of the fantastic book Getting Things Done, recommends that busy people keep a ‘tickler’ file. A ‘tickler’ file can be a Word document, notebook, or a permanent ClockingIt task. The idea is that a tickler file is somewhere to quickly jot ideas when they occur to you, so that you don’t need to interrupt what you are doing and you can easily find the idea again in the future.

Tip number 3: Set daily micro goals

All too often we get overwhelmed by big tasks and end up floundering around not really achieving anything at all. The best way to counter this is to make a list of 3 to 5 small goals to achieve each day. You can either make your list the night before or first thing in the morning.

Online task lists are handy, but there is something about actually picking up a pen and writing on paper that helps to focus your mind. Micro goal setting ensures that you systematically get where you want to go. And it also helps you to feel like you are achieving something, each and every day.

Tip number 4: Get rid of clutter

A tidy office equals tidy mind. If you find yourself getting distracted by items on your desk, chat windows, the phone, or the view out of the window, then simply remove them (or change the position of your desk). It makes a world of difference to your power of concentration.

Tip number 5: Limit your email checking to twice a day

Did you know that for most people, email is the single biggest interruption? We recommend checking your email only after midday, as you may discover a lot of fires to put out that are best left until after you’ve done some important work. Don’t keep checking your email throughout the day: Close your email program or the window in your browser. Concentrate on your current tasks and limit yourself to two checks a day at the most.

Tip number 6: Learn to say ‘no’

Being able to stay on task for an extended period is vital for getting a good result. But that can’t be done if you are constantly getting interrupted throughout the day.

The solution is to get ruthless: Only say ‘yes’ to tasks that just can’t wait, or that can be easily completed along with your other goals for the day.

Tip number 7: Get the worst job over and done with first thing.

Procrastination is very distracting. Get into the habit of tackling the task you dread the most first thing in the morning, so that your mind is free from niggling worry for the rest of the day.

Tip number 8: Pull to-dos out of emails and add them to your task list.

Going back and forth from the original email to check up on what you need to do can waste valuable minutes — and increase the likelihood that you’ll overlook something critical. Make sure you immediately add tasks from emails to your time-management software.

Tip number 9: Use the 80:20 ratio.

Eighty percent of your time should be spent ‘doing’, and no more than 20% should be spent learning. This is an especially important lesson for affiliates! We can be easily suckered into sales pitches from internet marketing gurus… and we all know how long those sales pitches can be! If you’re going to give time to these sales pitches, or to reading forums and blogs and newsletters, make sure it fits in with your schedule for getting things done. Set yourself a timed task and keep track of how much time you spend. Then decide whether that time would have been better spent achieving goals on your task list.

Tip number 10. Use a cell phone with a calendar or personal organizer.

When you’re busy it’s easy to forget important appointments. One way of solving this problem is to add appointments and meetings to your cell phone calendar and schedule the alarm to go off 15 minutes before-hand.

Tip number 11. Keep a separate to-do list for personal matters.

If you suddenly realise there is something that you need to do that has nothing to do with work, write it down in a separate personal to-do list and come back to it outside of work time. Keeping your personal life organised ensures it doesn’t overflow into your business day.

Tip number 12. Delegate as much as you can

Don’t hoard tasks that your staff or other people are more than capable of carrying out for you. Some people find letting go of pet activities is tough at first, but it’s very necessary in order to free up more time.

Also, make sure that you have set times each day for appointments with staff and/or joint venture partners. This is critical if you want to avoid constant interruptions throughout the day.

So there you have our 12 tips for doubling productivity!

It’s easy to downplay or put off organising your business, but setting up efficient business practices is just as important as good SEO or pay per click strategies. So make sure that you take these seriously!

Here are 31 anyone-can-do-it plans to help you make extra money in college:

Get a job - There are plenty of places on, or near your campus that will hire college students. Because they regularly work with students you can expect them to be willing to adapt to your study schedule and even your time off of school.

Have a digital camera? Sell stock photography online - If you’ve always enjoyed taking pictures then why not make a little money off of them? You can sell your images online to places like Dreamstime.com. You’ll make money every time someone downloads your image, and most places will even let you retain part of the copyright.

Get Paid to Write Online – Can you write well? If so, there are plenty of places online that are willing to pay you to write for them. Check out this site – they list new jobs every morning, Monday – Friday.

Be a tutor - If you excel at English, Math, Science or any subject at all, you can be pretty sure there are other students who do not! Set up your own tutoring service and charge for it. You can also offer tutoring sessions online via chat rooms.

Donate Plasma - If you can stand getting your blood drawn then you can do some good and earn some money at the same time. Most places will let you donate once a month so you can pick up an easy $35 to $45 this way.

Check to see if you have any unclaimed money - Most states have searchable online databases where you can quickly check to see if you have unclaimed money..

Sell Tickets to Your School’s Sporting Events - College basketball and football tickets can be hot items, and students usually get first pick. Buy a couple of extra tickets for big events and sell them to friends and family.

Get into a paid internship or a work-study program - If you qualify you can earn money and college credit at the same time.

Recycle bottles and cans – If you’ve ever taken a peek into a campus trash can then you’ll know it’s a haven for discarded aluminum cans and plastic soda bottles. You could even get a few friends to go in together on this and split the profits. You’ll be cleaning up your campus, helping the environment, and making money all at the same time.

Take Odd Jobs - Put the word out with your friends and family. Let them know you are available to mow their grass, house / pet / baby sit, do light housework, plant flowers, whatever they need. You will be really surprised at how much money you can make doing this. You can set your own hours too, so it will never interfere with your school work.

Be a “Fixer-Upper!” - If you can repair computers, leaky faucets, drafty windows or anything else that breaks you can make money doing it for others.

Find out what people want and sell it to them - This could be as simple as running to Walmart and picking up cheap colas and chips and re-selling them, or as complex as installing radios and helping other students turn their cars into hybrids to save on gas.

Hit up the Sorority and Fraternity Houses on Campus - Ask around and find out if they will let you come in once a week and clean for them. By pitching that every member “would only have to donate X amount” a month you could make quite a bit of money just from swishing and swiping a few toilets. It’s a great way to get social introductions too.

Sell Things on Ebay or Craigslist - Make a habit of visiting yard sales, estate sales, auctions, and going through your own garage. Then list your finds online and sell them. You can generate a nice secondary income from this once you learn what you are doing.

Take on Seasonal Work: Shovel snow, rake leaves, plant flowers, wrap gifts. You could even put together a list of cheap, “must have” items each season for men and women of different age groups. Then, sell those lists for a dollar or two a piece. Who wouldn’t love to have a quicklist of cheap gift ideas that their Aunt Fanny, little brother, or Mom might want for Christmas?

Capitalize on the Holidays - If you know Valentines Day is approaching, get together with your best guy friends and offer to be the person that picks up all the flowers / chocolates and cards that they need. They give you the money, and you deliver it to them – minus a small fee of course!

Build a Website or a Blog - If you enjoy being online this one is easy to do. Get signed up with Google Adsense, Amazon.com’s Affiliate Program, and Linkshare, just to name a few. You may never make a ton of money doing this, but you will probably earn enough to buy a few extra cups of coffee each month.

Flip Websites - If you are really good at building websites, then consider doing that as a side job. For more information on how to get started flipping websites check out this site, and this site.

Be a Personal Trainer - Most campuses have free gyms for students – but not all students know how to use the equipment! Stick up some flyers, and hang around the gym. You can offer your services as a spotter, and instructor, to those up -and- coming gym rats.

Check out your school’s Psych program, and volunteer to take part in their studies - If you are willing to let them pick your brain or study your latent Oedipus complex, you could make a fair amount of money each month.

Offer to be an assistant to your professor - Some departments will hire students to assist professors in grading papers, making photocopies, doing research etc.

Look for on-campus jobs - One of the biggest and best ways to make money in college is to look for an on-campus job. Check out the library, be a security escort, or even a parking attendant. Many of these jobs come with discounted tuition so they are snapped up quickly. If you can’t manage to get a job on campus your freshman year, decide what you want to do and start lobbying for it – find out how to sign up so that you can get a good deal on your tuition the next year.

Deliver Newspapers - Yes, it’s early in the morning, but you can make several hundred dollars a month delivering newspapers. It’s also safe to assume that your hours will not conflict with any of your class schedules!

Sell Your Video Game Accounts - If you love playing online games and you can level your characters or make gold quickly, then you can make a decent amount of money doing it as a side business. Besides, learning to set the prices of online auction houses is an excellent compliment to an economics class!

Become a Model - Campus Art Departments usually need models, and contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to be naked to do it – mostly they want you dressed, and sitting, standing, or posing.

Run a Car Wash - Get together with some friends once a month, hold a car wash, and split the profits.

Create a Calendar - If you belong to any on-campus organizations, offer to create a yearly calendar for them. You can have them printed cheaply online, and sell them at a profit. Donate a portion of the profits to the organization, and keep the rest.

Sell T-Shirts - If you have a witty idea for a T-shirt you can design and sell it on Zazzle.com. Tell everyone you know about them, and you earn a percentage of the sale when they log on and buy one.

Teach a Mini-course - Everyone at college is there to learn, and if you have a specific skill like writing, power-leveling video game characters, flipping websites, even water skiing or knitting, then chances are other students would be willing to pay you a small amount to learn that skill. So, set up your own mini-instruction course, meet twice a month and charge a reasonable fee.

Take Notes in Class and Sell Them - You’re sitting in class and taking notes anyway, right? Offer to sell your notes to your classmates. Many students who take notes on their own would still be willing to buy yours if you organize them well. After all, you may catch something they missed, and an extra study aid is always valuable before a final. This is one way to make money and good grades at the same time!

Work your network - When you need extra money, start by talking to the people you know. Find out if they know anyone who is hiring, or if they have any creative ideas for making money.

The current environment

In 2008, there were 1.2 million job losses, unemployment is currently at 6.5%, and the largest companies are shedding as much as 10% of their workforces. There will be 1.5 million college graduates this year, yet the job growth rate is at a six year low, at 1.3%! The amount of jobs posted online is decreasing at over 13%, which has all led to the ratio of 3.3 job seekers per each job.

Social networks are starting to become part of the criteria that both hiring managers and college admissions officers are using to weed out applicants. One in five hiring managers conduct background checks using social networks (primarily Facebook), while one in ten college admissions officers do the same.

It’s time for you to be open-minded and think differently about how you’re going to get your next job and keep it. I’m not saying you shouldn’t submit your resume to job banks, corporate websites, vertical job agents (Simply Hired/Indeed) or attend job fairs, but these should only consume 10% of your time. The other 90% should be concentrated on the following seven social media secrets, which will not only get you a job, but help you create your own dream job!

Without further ado, here are our 7 tips!

1. Conduct a people search instead of a job search

The majority of jobs aren’t posted online. Hiring managers get a list of employee referral candidates before they even bother to view resumes from those who submit them online. Sometimes the listed jobs aren’t available or never existed in the first place. Many studies have noted that 80% of jobs are taken through networking, but few have sought to use the web to search and locate people they would actually enjoy working for at companies that they get excited about.

The 3-step people search:

1. Identify the top five companies that you would like to work for.
Use a focused approach instead of flooding thousands of inboxes with spam. You want to brand yourself, not just as the person of best fit for a job, but as someone who is eager and ecstatic to work for the company.

2. Use search engines to track employees that currently work there.
There are over 130 million blogs in Technorati and you can search through them to possibly find someone who works at one of your top five companies. You can search through corporate groups, pages and people on Facebook. You can even do the same on Twitter. Then there are people search engines such as pipl, peek you, and wink. Once you find a contact name, try googling it to see if there is any additional information about that person.

3. Connect with the person directly.
Social media has broken down barriers, to a point where you can message someone you aren’t friends with and don’t have contact information for, without any hassles. Before you message a target employee, realize that they receive messages from people asking for jobs all the time and that they might not want to be bothered on Facebook, where their true friends are. As long as you’ve done your homework on the company and them, tailor a message that states who you are and your interest, without asking for a job at first. Get to know them and then by the 3rd or 4th messages, ask if there is an available opportunity.

2. Use attraction-based marketing to get job offers

The traditional way of searching for a job was proactive, forcing you to start a job that you might not have enjoyed. The new approach is about building a powerful personal brand and attracting job opportunities directly into your doorstep. How do you do this? You become a content producer instead of just a consumer and the number one way to do that on the web is to launch a blog that centers around both your expertise and passions.

You need to be passionate to be committed to this project because it requires a lot of writing, creativity and consistency in order for it to actually help you. A blog is a non-intrusive, harmless and generous way of getting recruiters interested in your brand, without you even asking for a job! Make the recruiters fall in love with you and only send you opportunities that are related to your blog content, so you end up happy in the end.

This works a lot and is expected for new-age marketing jobs that require experience in social media and can even help you jump-start a new business off of your blog platform. By pulling recruiters into your world, you are able to impress them with what you want them to see and they can make a quick decision whether to hire you or not, without you hearing about rejection. Start a blog today using Wordpress.com (for beginners) or install Wordpress.org onto your own host (such as GoDaddy or Bluehost).

3. Be proactive on Twitter

Twitter has become the ultimate utility to connect directly with recruiters and employees at companies you want to work for. By conducting Twitter searches, following recruiters on your account and using the “@” sign to communicate with them on occasion, you will start to learn a lot about them and their companies.

Before you follow anyone on Twitter, you HAVE TO have a completed profile. This means, you should have a short bio, the location where you’re from, a link to a site that recruiters can go to for more information (I recommend your blog or your LinkedIn profile) and an avatar of yourself (not a clown or Homer Simpson please). This way, you stand a better chance of securing an opportunity or a relationship with people who care enough to read your profile.

Most people get jobs on Twitter by already having hundreds or thousands of followers. For example, I’ve heard of at least ten people getting a job by tweeting “just got laid off, looking for a job in finance” and then receiving a few direct messages with people who want to help them. Of course, these individuals had built trust, credibility and relationships with their followers over time, so they were more inclined to come to their rescue. You can do the same, just start right now!

4. Capitalize on LinkedIn

It’s no surprise that LinkedIn () has been extremely profitable and successful as of late. Recruiters are starting to use LinkedIn as the main place for sourcing candidates because it’s free and the top professionals are on there. Many people don’t use LinkedIn to the best of their ability and fail to complete their entire profile, such that it says “100% complete.”

Just like any other search engine recruiters are using, keywords are extremely important. You want to fill out your entire profile, just like you would a resume, but include the same avatar you are using on Twitter (see above) and ensure that the summary section is complete. You’ll also want to get at least one recommendation from a supervisor or friend, which will give you a “1″ next to a “thumbs up” graphic when people search for you.

Then, you should import all your contacts from Outlook, Gmail, etc, so that you can start to build your network or grow your existing network. The more people you’re connected to the better because you’re only able to reach other people in your network (1st, 2nd & 3rd degrees) by having these connections. You may want to pay for a premium account, so you can contact other recruiters that may help you. Finally, you should conduct searches on there for jobs that you may be interested in and reach out to those individuals that may supply you with an interview or referral.

5. Advertise your brand using AdWords and Facebook Social Ads

Google AdWords is Google’s advertising platform, which offers CPC (cost-per-click) and CPI (cost-per-impression) pricing for advertisements on Google and partner sites. Some of their partner sites are newspapers, radio and TV.

Before running your advertisement, you need a landing page. If you have a website or blog, then use the resume page within it to display through advertising. This works beautifully because recruiters can see that single resume page and notice all the other pages/options on your website, to get a better sense of your brand.

Here’s how to create your ad:

Title. When you create your ad, label yourself as a specialist, expert or guru on the title tag. You might want to state the fact that it’s your resume first.

Description. In the next two description tags, pull out your biggest achievements in 6 words or less and list your personal brand statement or a few descriptors.

URL. For your URL, don’t use the URL for your resume page. Instead use yourname.com for personal branding purposes. Drop the “www” from the domain you want to promote because it’s unnecessary.

Facebook Social Ads allow businesses and individuals to advertise using Facebook’s news feed or left rail (will change to 2 ad spots on the right when the new interface swaps over). This program works similar to Google’s but you can use a picture and it’s more “word-of-mouth friendly” because ads travel through the news feed of friends.

Here’s how to create your ad:

Title. What is the ad for? The title is the most important piece of your ad because it has the most “text” emphasis. I would say “I want to work for ” or “Resume for .” Try and be as specific as you can.

Picture. Just like your Facebook picture, don’t use a picture that you wouldn’t want shown to your future employer. I would go for a professional yet personal picture.

Description. Don’t write your resume, but instead give the viewer a quick description of who you are, what you do and what job you want in 25 words.

Once you create your ad, either link it to your Facebook page, LinkedIn profile or blog/website. These ads are all about targeting a specific group that would care about your resume or hiring you for that matter. When you select your target audience, keep your major in mind, as well as the company and location.

6. Construct a video resume and upload it to YouTube

A search for “video resume” on YouTube will give you over 1,700 results. Many video resumes are good, while others are so amateur and rehearsed that they subtract from a given candidates marketing program. The key with a video resume is that very few people have actually created one, so they serve as a differentiator in the recruiting process.

A good video resume is short, describes the value you can contribute to a given position, explains why you’re the best person for the job and talks about your background in a story-like format. If you aren’t a person with an outgoing and lively personality, then don’t bother creating one. Since you’re filming yourself, don’t rush because you can always try it a hundred times before you upload the final version to YouTube.

7. Subscribe to blogs that have job listings

We all subscribe to blogs to receive information based on our interests, at least I hope. Over time we rely on these sources for information to keep us updated on what is happening in certain industries or different trends that are developing. In the past few years, the larger blogs have started to integrate job banks into their own websites, using software/hosting from companies such as Job-a-matic.

Blogs that have taken this approach include Guy Kawasaki’s blog, GigaOM, and Jeremiah Owyang’s Web Strategy Blog.

Other blogs, such as Darren Rowse’s Problogger Blog offer blogging jobs.

This targeting will save you from hours searching and help escort you to jobs that you’d actually want.

Integrate the traditional and social media approach

These seven secrets are extremely important in your next job search. The most successful job searches come from those who have already built up strong networks, both online and off. You need to integrate this new-age approach with the traditional approach you’ve already been using, in order to be consistent, so there are no surprises from the recruiter’s perspective. They want the candidate they see on paper or online.

I would recommend that you use a link to your blog, LinkedIn profile and YouTube video resume on your traditional resume. You’ll also want to link your existence on all social networks together. You need to be where recruiters are searching, as well as become a content producer so you can attract them directly to you. That is how you have a successful job search and stand out for years to come.

As we all know U.S. economy currently is facing some of the toughest times since the Great Depression. Honestly it doesn’t seem to get any better. The start of 2009 has been pretty shaky with thousands being laid off from their job already. These are tough times, no doubt about that. But these are also times when its time to step up and take a different route rather than giving up and finding yet another boss to work for.

It takes 5 things to succeed as an entrepreneur ( there are more than 5 but these we think are critical )

Dream

Hard Work

Positive Attitude

Consistency, and

Resources

We certainly can’t help you much with the top four aspects of succeeding as an entrepreneur. However, we think we have compiled a pretty good list for you in terms of resources. Below you will find some of the best and resourceful articles, links to sites and twitter profiles and links that will help you as an entrepreneur.

I find something cool, I tell you about it. If you buy it, I get a cut of the price. This can be an extremely lucrative way to make money on the internet if you know how to do it right.

There are a lot of preconceived notions about affiliate marketing and most of them are wrong. A lot of people believe that either the products for sale or the commissions themselves are crappy. While both of these can be true, they’re by no means necessary. People think that if a company is asking for help selling their product they must really need the help because the product sucks. The reality is that many companies feel affiliate marketing works better than traditional advertising and substitute affiliate marketing for their ad budget.

Brand Name Companies that Use Affiliate Marketing:

Best Buy

eBay

Amazon.com

Blockbuster

Napster

Netflix

The list goes on and on…

The reason affiliate marketing gets a bad rap is because it is often abused by shortsighted people. In their quest to make a quick buck, they recommend products they shouldn’t be recommending, or they push their readers too hard. If you just recommend good products and you don’t act like a sleazebag in the process you can make a lot of money and help a lot of people at the same time.

Here’s an example. In Canada, there are two major home electronics stores. Best Buy sells on a non-commission basis. Future Shop sells on a commission basis.

The products are the same and the prices are the same. Every now and again one or the other of them will have a sale, but that’s about the only difference.

The Sony TV you buy from Future Shop from a commissioned salesperson is no different than the Sony TV you buy from a Best Buy non-commissioned salesperson. It’s just that their business models are structured differently.

The benefit of shopping at Future Shop is that it is in the employee’s best interests that you buy something, and buy it from them. That means they’re pretty pushy, but they’re certainly attentive.

The benefit of shopping at Best Buy is that you get completely objective help. That means they sometimes border on apathetic and it’s hard to find a salesperson when you need assistance, but if you do find a salesperson they don’t care if you buy anything or not and you’re never going to feel pressured.

As an affiliate, you want somewhere between these two extremes. Helpful and knowledgeable, but not so pushy or so objective that nobody learns what they need to learn.

Check back soon for the next lesson!

On that note, I also want to add that this website will not contain all the fluff that you find with other blogs that apparently helping you to make money online, this site will contain nothing but solid, genuine, in-depth information.

On February 27th 2009 I spent around 3-4 hours building a niche website like I usually do, and then I haven’t touched the site since. In March 2009 the site has made me $1,096 and will continue to earn me money for months to come, here’s how…

We are going to be touching on four different topics in this post that led to this income, and they are:

Finding a Product

Keyword Research

Setting Up the Site

Getting Backlinks

Before I get into the post I want to make it clear that I’ve spent no more than 4 hours on this project, it is only promoting one product and I simply did it in order to test out OnlineMarketResults for the first time.

Finding a Product

This is without a doubt the most important aspect of making money online as an affiliate marketer. For those of you who don’t know, basically an affiliate marketer is someone who promotes the products of another person or company and makes a commission.

So for example, if I promote a $40 product I might make around $30 in commission. The person selling the product can afford to do this because it is usually digital products that I promote (eBooks, CD’s, DVD’s, Membership sites) that are easy to duplicate at little to no cost. In other words, they are getting $10 for doing absolutely nothing and it’s $10 they would not have had otherwise.

This is a product that I had seen mentioned a few times in affiliate forums that I frequent, so I decided to try and promote it. As stated, I found the product via NeverBlue, if you check out their inventory there are literally hundreds of products and services you can promote for a commission.

I decided to choose a product that would make me around $30 per sale, and decided that I would only drive free traffic to the page. I usually just pick products that I find interesting from either Motive or Clickbank and then I move onto keyword research.

Note that any product can theoretically make you money. Some do a lot better than others of course and it’s just a matter of testing.

Time Spent: 30 minutes

Keyword Research

For my keyword research I usually use the MSN Adcenter tool, which tells me exactly how many people are searching for my chosen keywords / keyphrases in the MSN search engine. The reason I do this is because sometimes you can find some gems that people miss by using other keyword tools, and I know how to rank highly in MSN search very easily.

You do have to pay $5 on your credit card to use their keyword tool though, so if you don’t want to do that you can use Google’s free keyword tool instead.

The job of keyword research is to find how many people are searching for terms that might lead them to be interested in your product. As an example if I’m promoting a product for ’six pack abs’ then I’m going to be looking at keywords like ab workouts, six pack abs exercises and so on. I was building a site in the health niche, and using the MSN keyword tool I found a keyword that gets 20,000 searches per month and has little competition.

Therefore, if I could rank in the top 10 search results in MSN for that keyword, I could probably get around 100-200 visitors per day. If only 5% of visitors convert, 5-10 then at $30 I could be making $300 per day.

These were just estimated in my head; I ended up converting at around 1.7% which is decent.

Time Spent: 15 minutes

Setting Up the Site

Once I had decided my product, and found some keywords people use that might lead to some sales, I decided to set-up my site. I chose a domain that was very close to the keyphrase I wanted to rank for, I actually managed to by mykeyphrase.com which was perfect.

I use Hostgator for my hosting as they are perfect for my needs at only $5 per month and have excellent support. Additionally, with their control panel, you can literally set up a website that looks like this one (Wordpress) within a matter of seconds.

I created a very simple 3 page website which included my homepage, consisting of a logo, a few bullet-points about a great program and then a link to that program. Motive Interactive will give you a unique link for each product you want to promote, so they know you sent the visitor and deserve the commission.

The second page of the site simply went into more details about one of the products, and the third page was a quick blurb about why the site was setup and who is behind it. For MSN you actually don’t need more than one page to rank, but for the likes of Google and Yahoo it’s better if you add a few pages to your site.

Time Spent: 2 hours 30 minutes

Building Backlinks

I had my product chosen, I had picked a keyphrase and was able to get a very nice domain to help me rank for that term. Then, once I had a few pages on the site it was time to build some backlinks.

As a quick summary for those who are new to this industry, in order to rank highly in the search engines you need to build backlinks to your site. If I wanted HQHow to rank for ‘How to Make Money Online’ I would have to get lots of other, relevant sites linking here with that anchor text, which would look like this: How to Make Money Online.

There are many manual ways to build backlinks, such as forum signatures, directory submissions and even article marketing. However, for this test site and specifically for MSN, you rarely need to go to that extent.

Instead of doing all the manual work, I use Bookmarking Demon. This does cost a little bit of cash, but I’ve literally found it invaluable. I’ve had the software for over 2 years now and Edwin (the creator) updates it very very regularly. Just check out the videos on the site to see what it is all about.

Time Spent: Completely up to you, I spent around 15 minutes on this

Earning Money

Just to prove that I’m not a fraud and I did actually do this in only one month with a website that was brand new, here you go:

The best thing about this is that the website will continue to make me money for months to come, and I won’t touch it. The backlinks I’ve built should keep me ranking highly in the search engines and keep users converting.

Now imagine if you can do that in 4 hours, what you could do in one month or even a year?

If you’re new to the industry and parts of this post didn’t make sense, check out our free eBook which goes into more detail with screenshots.
There’s rarely anything new in the stories, but somehow they continue to pop up in all sorts of media outlets. More and more companies are using Facebook as a recruiting tool (and those who aren’t yet should hire us to help them), but for the most part any press that has included the words “employer” and “Facebook” has been negative. Not anymore.

A Job Search Experiment on Facebook

We received over 40 responses from interested job seekers and e-mailed each of them with specific details about what we had in mind. Here’s what we sent them:

Facebook allows you to target your ads very specifically. We target seniors at specific colleges with our ads, so there’s a good chance that some of you found out about One Day, One Job this way. More and more employers are trying to leverage Facebook to find great entry-level talent, but not many are doing a good job. We offer consulting services to help them do that, but we have much more fun helping job seekers. I recently came up with the idea of reversing the roles. Instead of helping employers target students with recruitment messages, why not help students/new grads target employers with Facebook ads?

Basically, we want you to create an ad for yourself. The goal is to sell yourself in a few short sentences and convince any recruiters who may see your ads to click through to your resume/web page/contact information. You’ll need to put together an image (a picture of you or something that tells employers why they should hire you), a pitch about yourself in as few word as possible, and somewhere to link to. Most importantly you need a target. This will probably eliminate some of you from the experiment, but its absolutely necessary to make the method worthwhile. Your target can be based on keywords, location, or a company. Targeting by company is the most likely to succeed, because you can guarantee that you’re actually reaching people who work at companies that might consider hiring you. How you target will depend on what kind of jobs you are looking for. We’ll help you tailor an advertising campaign to meet your job search objectives, so don’t worry about not having any idea about how to do this. We’ll walk you through everything step by step, but you should already be very familiar with using Facebook.

You’re probalby saying, but doesn’t Facebook advertising cost money? Yes, it does. Luckily, there are some current Facebook promotions that give away free advertising credits. We’re planning on having you use those, although we hope you’re gung-ho enough about this idea that you would pay for the ads if you had to (they’re pretty cheap).

How 5 Recent College Grads Used Facebook to Make Employers Want Them

Of those we e-mailed, 16 committed to being part of the experiment, and only 5 go-getters were adventurous (conscientious?) enough to give the experiment a fair shot. As a group they had varied results, but all considered the experiment to be worthwhile. Below are profiles of each of the 5 students and their observations on participating in our Facebook job search experiment.

Katelyn Hill

Katelyn Hill recently graduated from Abilene Christian University with a degree in Electronic Media. She loves television and movies and hopes to work in the entertainment industry, so she targeted the Walt Disney Company with her Facebook advertising campaign. Her ad received 685 clicks, which garnered 21 e-mails and 4 Facebook messages. She was offered one job interview, but wasn’t quite qualified for the position, so she declined. She also had several e-mails from individuals who offered to forward her resume to their supervisors. Many others offered her general advice on finding a job with Disney or commented on how creative they thought her ad campaign was.

Here are Katelyn’s thoughts:

I thought the experiment was a great idea. Although I haven’t gotten a job yet, the experiment provided me with a lot of new contacts and helped get my name out there. I received so much response to the ad, I am working on developing a new ad targeting a different company. All in all, I thought the experiment was a fantastic and the positive responses I received gave me hope that my new job is just around the corner!

Here are some of the notes that Katelyn received in response to her ad:

“Anyways, if you see a job posting on disneycareers.com and you want more info or would like help getting your resume moved up to the top of the pile, I might be able to help. Feel free to contact me.”

“good thinking! nice advertising! ”

“Getting your resume pinged to my home page on facebook is the kind of out of box thinking we are always looking for.”

Michael Wuest

Michael Wuest just finished his M.B.A. at Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri-Rolla), and he dreams of working in brand management or marketing. He recently interned with the Communication Department at his alma mater, and helped them with branding issues related to their recent change in name. Michael got more creative with his advertising campaign and tested a few ad variations.

This is what Michael had to say about his participation in the experiment:

My goals for the experiment were to target employers who have a strong brand identity and marketing teams. This is where I felt I could gain the most experience if I were recruited to work for any one of these companies. I originally tried to be more creative but that did not work. I then tried a more generic ad and got a lot more responses.

I truly feel this is a good way to show employers how creative and distinctive you can be. This experiment definitely interested me, since it is another way to market yourself to potential employers and develop your own brand. The next time I do this I may change my ad to reflect my education more, since I believe that is a strong point on my resume and since I am more an entry-level style candidate than upper-management.

Michael’s first ad read, “Knock, knock. Opportunity knocks only once. I’m knocking. Click to see my resume.” He targeted people at Facebook, Accenture, Anheuser-Busch, Ford Motor Company, T-Mobile, Wal-Mart, AT&T, Sprint, Miller Brewing, Monsanto, The Walt Disney Company, Nestle, ESPN, St. Louis Blues Hockey, and Fox Sports. His ad was viewed 50,992 times and clicked 117 times with a total cost of $30.33. This broadly targeted ad wasn’t very successful for Michael – it resulted in no leads, so he narrowed down his approach for his second ad. For his second attempt Michael targeted Sprint with the ad that you see to the right. This ad was viewed 2,588 times and clicked 32 times with a total cost of $5.12. This ad resulted in 5 e-mails from current and former Sprint employees and an informal phone interview. Michael has applied formally through Sprint’s employment website and is currently waiting to hear back from them. He is also experimenting with targeting other employers through Facebook ads.

Laura Pilkington

Laura Pilkington is a recent graduate from Old Dominion University with a degree in Business and Public Administration, Management, and Psychology. She is looking for an entry-level job in operations or marketing. She had heard extremely good things about working at the SAS Institute, so she targeted them with her Facebook ads. Her ad was viewed 2,288 times, clicked 44 times, and she spent $9.24.

Here are Laura’s thoughts:

I’ve made some contacts, but no interviews have come from it yet. It opened up conversation and allowed me to let people know that I was looking for a job. Now people are recommending companies based on their reputation for working with their employees. Being relatively new in the city, it helped me to learn about possible employers to look into now. I thought it was an interesting process. I wouldn’t necessarily do this for every job I’m interested in, but it was a great way to get my name out.

Think that Laura Pilkington would make a great hire for your company? Reach out to <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.linkedin.com/in/lemop" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Flemop','Laura+Pilkington+on+LinkedIn')");" href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/lemop" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Flemop','Laura+Pilkington+on+LinkedIn')">Laura Pilkington on LinkedIn.

Alex Payne

Alex Payne just graduated from Duke University with a double major in English and Literature, and he has been exploring career options in marketing and publishing. His ads targeted a company that he was already working for part-time, Uloop, and Oxford University Press. Because Uloop is such a small company, Alex’s ad targeting their Facebook network only was shown 26 times and received no clicks. His ad targeting OUP was much more successful, as it garnered 622 views and 20 clicks. One of these clicks led to a Facebook message from a Duke alum who had worked for Oxford Journals. He said:

I saw your Facebook ad and know that the Journals Production team is currently hiring (you may have seen a job posting if you’ve been checking the OUP site). One of my close friends is reviewing applications and, from your LinkedIn profile, thinks you might be a good candidate. But of course, for her to consider you she would need a formal application.

Here are Alex’s thoughts on his participation in the One Day, One Job Facebook Experiment.

This result exactly what I wanted to get out of this experiment. I wanted to know about opportunities and receive information. I think that as I apply to new places I will use these tactics again in order to gain attention to myself. The ability to show people my references and resume immediately is a great help. I think it is important to do this only at select companies and not as a overall scheme. If you do that you will get too many hits that mean nothing and lose money.

If Alex Payne is just the type of new hire that you’re looking for, why not reach out to <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.linkedin.com/in/alexmpayne" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Falexmpayne','Alex+Payne+on+LinkedIn')");" href="http://www.linkedin.com/in/alexmpayne" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.linkedin.com%2Fin%2Falexmpayne','Alex+Payne+on+LinkedIn')">Alex Payne on LinkedIn?

Baker Barnett

Baker Barnett recently graduated from the University of Miami with a degree in Finance. He’s looking for a job as a financial analyst in the Washington, D.C. area. Although Baker didn’t receive any e-mails from interested employers, he did get a number of suggestions from people on where he should apply for jobs. Baker’s ad generally targeted people in the Washington D.C. area. It was viewed 35,315 times and clicked 76 times for a total spend of $26.93.

This is what Baker had to say about the experiment:

I think the experiment was a very interesting and different approach to the job search process. It got me to think about things like how to target my message and how to get everything I wanted to convey into a short space, which were not strong points beforehand and this was an informative way to go about learning those skills. I also received numerous e-mails from people asking about my results and telling me how they had been contemplating a similar approach via Facebook advertising, so it is a good thing we got out there when we did as I feel this will become a good way for people to get additional contacts through an easy to use advertising interface.

If Baker Barnett sounds like someone that you’d want to hire, you can find <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.jobfox.com/people/BakerBarnett" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jobfox.com%2Fpeople%2FBakerBarnett','Baker+Barnett%E2%80%99s+resume+on+JobFox')");" href="http://www.jobfox.com/people/BakerBarnett" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jobfox.com%2Fpeople%2FBakerBarnett','Baker+Barnett%E2%80%99s+resume+on+JobFox')">Baker Barnett’s resume on JobFox.

Summing It Up

In case you haven’t figured it out from reading about the experiences of our 5 participants, Facebook advertising is a great way to grab the attention of employers. Landing a job is all about standing out, and these 5 students certainly made themselves stand apart from the competition. Although none of them has landed a job directly from his or her participation in our experiment, each has had overwhelmingly positive results from the ad campaigns. In fact, we were so impressed by the results that we decided to share them publicly before running another set of experiments. Here are some key takeaways from the experiment:

1. The most successful students were those who targeted a single company with a very specific ad that mentioned the company’s name in the text.

2. Targeting by location draws too many extraneous clicks and seems to have a low return on investment.

3. Spending more on ads leads to more responses.

4. This method is best suited for targeting larger employers with significant populations of Facebook users.

5. Most people are too lazy to take the initiative to do something like this. We told 40+ people about the experiment, 16 said that they would take part, and only 5 actually went through with it. Just because the method is now public doesn’t mean that it won’t continue to be effective.

6. Closing the deal is still important. A technique like the one that we have described will start a conversation with employers, but you need to be able to sell yourself in both informal and formal communications to actually land the job. Nobody is going to hire you just because they saw your ad.

Any other takeaways? Feel free to add your thoughts in the comments, and if you’d like to learn more about how to run your own Facebook advertising campaign targeting employers, keep reading.

A Step by Step Guide on How You Can Use Facebook to Make Employers Hunt You Down

Now that we’ve told you all about how Facebook ads can be used to get employers interested in hiring you, we want to make sure that you know everything that you need to know to get your own Facebook advertising campaign running. Here is a 7 step tutorial on setting up your campaign.

1. Sign Up

To get to the Advertising page, scroll to the bottom of any page on Facebook, and click the link that says Advertisers.

You’ll end up seeing this. Click the green button that says “Get Started.”

2. Figure Out What You Want to Advertise

Next you’ll come to this page. You’ll need to enter in the URL (web address) of whatever you’re going to link to.

This could be your LinkedIn profile, your <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/https://www.visualcv.com/onedayonejob" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','signing+up+for+a+VisualCV')" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','VisualCV')");" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.visualcv.com/onedayonejob" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','signing+up+for+a+VisualCV')" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','VisualCV')">VisualCV, your blog, or anything else. Make sure that it allows for people who click to contact you easily. We recommend <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/https://www.visualcv.com/onedayonejob" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','signing+up+for+a+VisualCV')" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','VisualCV')");" rel="nofollow" href="https://www.visualcv.com/onedayonejob" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','signing+up+for+a+VisualCV')" onclick="return TrackClick('https%3A%2F%2Fwww.visualcv.com%2Fonedayonejob','VisualCV')">signing up for a VisualCV not only because they have a great product, but also because we’ve built a partnership with them because of the popularity of this experiment.

Be sure to triple check this step. If you mess up, the entire ad campaign won’t work.

3. Target Your Ad

Here’s where you need to do the targeting. This can be tricky depending on whom you want to target.

The easiest group to target is a specific work place (you need to click a link to expand the window and make that option available). This is perfect if you’re targeting employers specifically. If you’re doing that, you should create separate ads for each employer.

4. Create Your Ad.

This is where you create your ad. Come up with a good title, and great copy. Sell yourself in as few words as you possibly can. This is a great starting point.

Use a photo of yourself if you wish. Don’t use any pictures that you don’t own (no company logos ).

5. Set Your Budget

Here’s where you make your bids on the ads. You should probably just go with the recommendations, but make sure your daily budget is low enough that you’ll get a few days’ worth of ads running.

6. Approve and Pay for Your Ad

Here you have to approve the ad and enter in your billing information.

Facebook requires a credit card to run an ad. Since you’ll be using free advertising credits, you won’t be billed, but you still have to enter in the information.

For a free $100 coupon code, <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/http://www.new.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=24249628048" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.new.facebook.com%2Fapps%2Fapplication.php%3Fid%3D24249628048','Install+the+Visa+Business+Network+Application')");" rel="nofollow" href="http://www.new.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=24249628048" onclick="return TrackClick('http%3A%2F%2Fwww.new.facebook.com%2Fapps%2Fapplication.php%3Fid%3D24249628048','Install+the+Visa+Business+Network+Application')">Install the Visa Business Network Application. Make sure that you install the application, and don’t become a Facebook Fan of it. You will be e-mailed the coupon code.

7. Monitor Your Campaign

Facebook offers simple analytics tools that allow you to monitor your advertising campaign in near real-time. In one simple interface you can see how often your ad is being shown, how many clicks you’re getting, and how much you’re spending.

It’s important to measure your campaign as it happens so that you can tweak it for maximum performance. Since Facebook ads cost money, you need to make sure that you’re getting a good return on your investment.

Any Questions?

One Day, One Job is all about helping college students find great first jobs. That’s why we’ve spent weeks designing and testing this experiment to make sure it was worth your while. Clearly, targeting employers with Facebook advertising is a technique that can help you get a job. If you have any questions or comments, please share them below. We’d love to get a lively discussion going on what works and what doesn’t when using Facebook ads to land a job.
